The Niven Ringworld has such a mountain. Filling the middle ear with fluid will damp the tympanum. Making this process slow or voluntary could add plot twist, perhaps only the priest class are taught how to clear their ears to be able to hear. (more) |

It would also allow people to take a risk of damage to the gun by heating it and hoping the solidified gun jam gets denatured before the stuck rounds explode and damage the gun.

Yeah, a radioactive Titanium isotope would be interesting. Might have to be an isotope that has a short half life and is synthetic.

I would suggest reading the books by Thor Heyerdahl to gain insight on proven ways of how to do this in a minimalist way.
A flotilla with N+2 smaller boats would be my choice if I had to make the crossing and the stakes were high.
