Comment Post #279499 @OlinLathrop, why does the specific function(s) of the device matter? The device can do things you only dream about doing right now. The stranger is offering you 30 years of tech advances wrapped up in a convenient little package. Do you buy those advances or not?

Comment Post #279877 So, if you're the CEO of Nokia in 1991 and someone from the future with an iPhone 12 showed up on your doorstep, you wouldn't buy them to see how they work? I find that hard to believe. I disagree with your second paragraph. No one outside of your top engineers would know that these devices even...

My friends and I are building a world with a 50 mile high volcano on it. The mountain is the result of some bored god deciding to play a joke on everyone. Or, some other god got angry and decided to really, for realz this time, bury an unruly city. The legends aren't especially clear on how it got ...

Question How do I manage memetic infection while time traveling?

Question What would it take to build a ship capable of crossing the Pacific?
In my story, I have a small extended family of 30 to 40 individuals ranging in age from 0 to 50 who are on the run from Chinese and Japanese forces in 1400AD. No place in Asia is safe for them. By a series of lucky chances they have found a very quiet location that appears to be untouched by humans....

Answer A: Is it realistic to see satellites moving across the sky centuries after humans stopped space activity?
Satellites will still be visible. A couple of characteristics make human satellites easy to see. They are fast and bright. Slow objects are difficult to pick out from the background star field. Faint objects don't emit enough light to be seen by the human eye. Fast Let's see how orbital per...
