How long could an ecosystem survive without sunlight? I am designing a terraformed Venus, where the planet has been given an Earth-like atmosphere but keeps it's original rotation rate. Colonists are importing Earth life to Venus to add a biosphere to the planet. My question is whether or not Earth life could survive the long day-night cycle of Venus? R... (more) |

Could a planet, tidally locked with the sun, have molten rock on the side that faces the sun? I am designing a solar system, with the first planet located very close to the parent star. This planet has become tidally locked to the star. Is it possible for to have a molten lava ocean on the side that is facing the sun? What would the conditions be like for on the other (solid) side of the pla... (more) |

Is this an accurate simulation of a further south Australia with a filled lake Eyre? I created this climate map based on the Koppen Climate Classification map. In this scenario Australia is moved 10 degrees of latitude further south and the Lake Eyre basin is filled (shown in map.) Is this an accurate representation of the resulting climate? (more) |

Is this fictional planet possible? I was trying to make an interesting moon of a gas giant similar to Jupiter with a liquid ocean of water. The moon orbits in the equivalent orbital space of Io and is about twice the size of Mars. This moon is kept warm by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and tidal heating. The moon's atmosphere has... Why would anyone consider terraforming Mars, considering it can't hold onto water vapour? From this graph it can be seen that Water Vapour can never be held by the Martian gravity, and would escape into space. How would future terraforming processes overcome this loss? (more) |

What realistic way could limit an FTL drive to only travelling between stars? How could a Faster than light drive be limited to only travelling between different solar systems, and not within a solar system? I don't really want to allow travel between planets in the same solar system using FTL or allow things like Kinetic Weapons to be equipped with FTL to destroy a planet by ... (more) |
