Could some natural process on a moon do enough stationkeeping to sustain an impossible orbit? I have several stories where I've wanted a moon in some weird orbit that is not allowed by orbital mechanics. In the past, I've had to change stories to bow to physics. Today, I had a thought while looking at photos of Saturn's moon Enceladus. As it orbits, Enceladus gets compressed by Saturn. The c... (more) |

Could a river on Earth be made of a liquid other than water? So far as I can research, all rivers on Earth are flowing water. There are other substances that are liquid at room temperature. Are there any natural processes that could create a river of something other than water? I'm not talking just emptying a reservoir... I'm taking like a grove of maple trees... (more) |

In modern world, what is the largest building that could be built overnight? I've worked a couple of Habitat for Humanity mass builds where entire houses go from a poured foundation to complete in the course of a few days, and whole neighborhoods are built in a week. There's a video made a few years back where they finished a whole house in a day, including pouring and settin... (more) |

Effect of impact of a pure gas comet? I'm not even sure if gas comets can exist naturally -- feel free to comment on that in the answers. But assume that somehow a large block of frozen hydrogen/helium/oxygen/nitrogen is tumbling through space and approaches earth. As it nears earth, it melts, then boils, but I presume it still holds tog... (more) |
