Is it harder for an intelligent octopus to live on land, or a human to live in space? I have a race of octopodes with the same intelligence distribution as humans. I want them to "colonise" land to a similar extent as we have "colonised" space; have regular transport between the ocean and land, and have a permanent settlement. Ideally there would also be some form of EVA suit, to enab... (more) |

If the rain all fell at once, how would Earth be different? If all the rain for the next 24 hours fell in one go, say over 5 seconds, how would the world be different? We're assuming the same volume of rain falls in each place on the Earth as does now, for example the U.K. gets around 3.6mm per day, of course varying throughout the year. My main interest is... How would the earth be different if the crust was at most 1km thick? Currently, the crust varies from 4km (oceanic) to 10km (continental) to 30km (mountains). How would the earth be different if it was all 1/4 the thickness? So it was 1km, 2km and 7km? Would we have more volcanoes / earthquakes / geysers? Would the crust be any warmer? Would life be different? (more) |

Is it possible to use Venus' temperature to generate electricity, and how would the electricity be transferred to Earth? Assumptions: We have materials that can withstand the temperatures/pressures/acidity of Venus. We can get to Venus and back reasonably easily (NASA does shuttles every 3 months). Here is Venus: From what I know, water boils at 100 C (at sea level on Earth) and the pressure on Venus at 40.5 km ... (more) |

What would the problems with / consequences of a torus shaped planet be? Take a torus planet: It has the structure of a normal planet (ours): The diagram is not to scale. Assume similar proportions of Crust:Mantle:Cores as the Earth. Is has a similar volume (close to 1.1 x 1012 km3). It is simply there, as of now. It's orbiting a star, similar to Sol, our sun in th...
