Questions about sick trees in wood

I want to write a piece of fiction about a female tree caretaker who researches a small group of beeches in a wood.

When she arrives, she sees that the trees are dried out. Is it realistic to say that these beeches have yellow leaves (or even lack leaves) and have cracks in their bark? Did I miss any details about a dried out tree that still lives? I want to say that the cause is that they were planted there recently, could this be correct?

Also would the solution be simple like giving them water regularly or is there a more complicated method?

Finally, I am curious how long a tree can live without water and when can't it be saved anymore?

Thank you for your help!
