Scientific Speculation FAQ

Welcome to Scientific Speculation! We're glad you're here. The following information is relevant primarily within this community. If you have a question that applies to the entire Codidact family of communities, you may want to look at our Global FAQ or Global TOS.

What is this site all about?

Scientific Speculation is for questions that arise from worldbuilding and other speculative developments that can be extrapolated from science. We focus here on *plausible science* in all its myriad forms, including extrapolating to developments that haven't happened yet. Topics don't have to be *real* but they have to be *realistic*. Faster-than-light travel, shapeshifters, life on other worlds? All fine. Pure magic with no science-based rules? Not a good fit.

Who are the moderators?

The site admins -- Monica Cellio, ArtOfCode, and luap42 -- also help.

What are the different categories for?

  • Q&A is for general questions.
  • Rigorous Science is for questions on the same topics but with a higher degree of rigor. We're looking for answers that cite credible research or present empirical evidence, and questions that invite such answers.
  • Meta is a place to ask questions about the community site as a whole. Having technical issues or need help with the site? Ask here.

What open-source license are posts on Scientific Speculation created under?

All posts are created under CC BY-SA 4.0 by default. If desired, you can also choose a different license on a per-post basis, but only when initially creating the post. The license cannot be changed after the post is first saved.
